Module Three begins...
I'm quietly confident about module three which is a new and unnerving feeling! When I started the last two modules it very much felt like starting from the bottom. But having started this module so far it feels like starting from halfway up the mountain. All the planning and researching and trying to understand how to plan and research has mostly been done in module two and I feel quite prepared to take on this inquiry.
(Whether this confidence will last as I start preparing to interview people and work at the same time is another story! But so far so good!)
I've been starting to amp up my reading and taking notes on podcasts I listen to and books I'm reading and things I didn't expect to link to my inquiry are suddenly popping up everywhere. I'm currently reading Hamilton and Me by Giles Terera and he mentions his vocal health on every second page. I also watched a really interesting interview with Amber Gray from 'Hadestown' where she talks about the over-singing that happens on Broadway during the Tony awards season. Although my inquiry is just focusing on musical theatre in the UK, this got me thinking about what it's like for performers over this side of the pond during awards season and how that affects vocal health.
So investigating that, preparing my interview questions, contacting potential participants, and crossing my fingers that I've given myself enough study time to complete this inquiry!
Hope everybody is doing well! x
Here's the interview with Amber Gray, well worth a watch; Amber Gray of 'Hadestown' on typecasting, motherhood | Famous Cast Words - YouTube

Hi Shelley, I love your analogy about starting half way up the mountain.I feel very similar, but also slightly terrified that I will actually be doing the inquiry this term. It sounds like you found a lot of useful literature for your inquiry, and although some are not based in the UK, I think it can really challenge your thinking and allow you to understand things from a different perspective. I will be asking Sam's opinion on this in my tutorial tomorrow as I have been doing the same. I have also been watching lots of interview recently, trying to understand interview techniques better, so will give this one with Amber Gray a watch. Thank you. I hope you have a great term :) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Alice! You too! Good luck with your interviews, I'm sure you'll be great!
ReplyDeleteHi Shelley! great post! im so glad you're feeling confident, I wish I could say the same. if im being honest I haven't thought about mod 3 at all now! haha I'm sure once I start properly again everything will just click! (well im hoping it does!)
ReplyDeleteI think over singing is such an interesting question because to me, its all mental, who are you over singing for? why do you feel the need to over sing, shouldn't you just trust your instrument? I know for me personally, if I have friends or family in watching a show, I defiantly give it a bit more, now you've got me thinking why?? I look forward to hearing more about your inquiry and how your interviews go!
